i still rave abt vidic and ferdinand.
they are good defenders if u use a normal defence lineup without any total football and complicated stuff. they can be brilliant only if they dont have a hundred thousand varibles like interfering wingers, to think about. for the sort of total football that fergy tried at the cl match, vidic and ferdinand wont work well.
i said that united have a decent defence because they do a brilliant job only when they stick to basics-'cover the guy with the ball'. anything other than that like the sort of stuff that went on in that dynamo kiev match- they mess up. ferdinand and the others were playing second fiddle to giggs and ronaldo in that match. they werent defending their usual style- the style that made me rave about them.

look, united has good defenders- defenders that u can admire. in a normal 4-4-2, they do a good job. but face it, they are as extraordinary as the attack and cannot play anywhere in the field. this is what i mean.

p.s. i knew u would disagree with me. but arguing with u is fun. :)

sorry.. i meant 'not as extraordinary as the attack'. bloopers!

i totally agree with u. but thats not what i was talking about.

i was talking about united's attempt at total football. its something u would find them playing only in unimportant cl matches because united are not perfect with the technique as yet. i was talking about why it is not perfect. it has nothing to do with vidic's form or how good a defender ferdinand is.

total football is rigourous. every player needs to be able to play at any part of the field. u just have one unit. u cannot separate the defence-midfield and the attack.as u might know, united's attack and midfield function as one unit. they are integrated. they play total football. but the defence is separate. ferguson is trying to integrate the defence with the midfield-attack. he cannot all of a sudden ask the defenders to run around the field and play total football. they are not used to it(definitely not their fault) and this would wreak havoc. so he decided that the experienced players(giggs and the others who have already integrated midfield and attck) to handle the defence task as the defenders help. giggs and ronaldo can pass the ball and score great goals but they cannot defend. the defenders can defend they cannot do midfield work. this is what went wrong.

united are not playing total football as yet. they are trying to. and even thats only in some champions league matches that they can risk losing. the united u see in epl is completely different. they have integrated the attack and midfield, as i have said before. unlike a lot of other clubs, midfield and the attack function as one unit. they play a lot of positions during the match(as u rightly said, giggs and ronaldo switch flanks. why the hell would they do that?) my last comment meant that the midfield and attack funtioning as one, captures the spirit of the total football technique. when the defence joins in as well, united would be playing total football. the switching flanks part is complex. it attempts to provide fluidity-the sort of fluidity that only total football can achieve. its because giggs and ronaldo can adjust to diffrent positions on the field(even if its just left flank and right flank, its still strenuous), that ferguson tried them in the defence. giggs and ronaldo play very differently from say...robben and phillips. they just dont connect the midfield and teh attack. they are a part of the attack. tevez doesnt function just as a stiker, neither does rooney. they support the midfield. rooney is often used as a deep lying forward. tevez does ball passing to a certain degree. united's attack-midfield is very different from that of other clubs. its not about fluncy. all big clubs have fluency. its about enormous fluidity.if they can achieve the same effect with the defence, then they would have achieved total football. thats what united is trying to do right now. they are integrate the defence to the attack and midfield, so that u would have one big unit. that big unit would be playing total football. at present they are on their way to total football.

i still think arguing with u is damn fun! :)

even i cant believe i am listening to telugu songs! i play each song 10 times! its like nothing i've heard before...

ya! I do hope to see ur point, but i need a proper full length match shot from the correct angles. clippings are of no use... u cant study ball-flow precisely. thats the prob.

happy holiday! :)

i saw ur point...
what u mean to say is that in total football players don't stick to their positions- everyone plays all positions. they just maintain the field formation, but no one is nailed down to one place.
but with united thats not the case, except for giggs and ronaldo, no one else actually switches places.
ya! ur right there.... i can understand.

but then i have a doubt... if it is not total football, what was it that united were trying to do in that dynamo kiev match? why was giggs, tevez and ronaldo in the defence? how do u explain united's attack? its not just fluidity. its a lot more than that. they do it because they can switch positions easily. thats not the sort of football other clubs play. what is it that united are doing? the stuff they do is magical... its so brilliant that i feel like watching them play forever!

all i can see is that they are midway through some really big makeover, thats gonna make them the strongest football club EVER!
i find it weird that they can bounce back from bad forms so easily. most clubs cant do it. if they start a season badly, they remain that way for the rest of the season! they cant change the lineup within a week and win a match after losing to a club like man city! their defence was painful in the man city match... it was beautiful in the hotspurs match. this was no fluke. there was really a change. how many clubs can do that?

what united are playing is no normal football. this is phenomenal stuff that 4-4-2 and modifications cannot produce.

and they play each match differently. the united that played chelsea was different from the one that played arsenal which was very different from the one that played kiev.
this is not the way clubs generally play. they are tring something big, but what?

actually i don't quite agree with ur last comment on united. but i am not in a mood to talk about football now.
there are a hundred things running in my mind. my rock band is debuting next week-we have a really tough song to practice, i have my tests coming up... loads of stuff.

i'll talk after all this is over...
